Paris rent a car tips
Usually, it is really simple to get a rental car by complying with the following:
-
Decide exactly what you need.
National
is the car rental company with highest customers' rank in
Paris
with a rating average score of 9/10, based on
5+
customer reviews. The cheapest vehicle from
National
is
Renault Twingo
of
Small, Compact, Mini
car rental class for
$38.34
per day.
Among the
Economy,
the most popular model is
Peugeot 208.
Its price starts from
$26.29
per day from
SIXT Rent A Car,
which rating average score is
7.9/10,
based on
5000+
customer reviews.
The cheapest car rental in Paris is
Fiat 500
from
AVIS Car Rental.
Its price is only
$15.39
per day.
AVIS Car Rental
was reviewed by
5000+
customers with a rating average score of 7.4/10.
- Select pick-up and drop-off date and time properly.
If you want to save some money, select the same pick-up and drop-off time. Car renting companies take
money for a full day of rental, so if you take a car for 25 hours, you will pay for 48 hours (two full days) of rental, and 74 hours will stand for 96 hours (four full
days) of rentals.
- If you are traveling with children, don’t forget to book a child safety seat for your kid. Even though a child seat rental may cost a considerable amount
of money , the fines for not having one may cost more than the cost of a child seat
rental. Also note that a regular plane ticket usually allows you to carry a child seat free of charge (contact your airline for more accurate information). In addition,
you can always buy your own child seat in the nearest supermarket after the arrival.
- You should always specify the correct Residence Country because it may result on the price of the rental or even refusal of rent a car. Usually for drivers
with US
citizenship, the listed prices don’t include CDW and
TP. If you are not from USA and buy such rental, you may be very unpleasantly
surprised by the manager's requirement to buy insurance as rental insurance is obligatory.
- When choosing a car, you should decide how many passengers will be traveling with you and how much baggage will be placed in the car. Note
that the number of suitcases
specified for each car is conditionally indicated. One suitcase usually refers to a handbag for standard hand luggage. If you are renting a car for more than 5 passengers,
it is often cheaper and more convenient to rent two cars of the standard car renting class, instead of one multi-seater vehicle.
- Always pay attention to the Fuel Policy. Not always pick up full and return empty option is advantageous. Don’t rush to purchase the full tank of fuel from
a car hire supplier on a small island or if you rent a car for a few days. It may turn out that you won’t be able to use all that purchased fuel.
- If you are going to use a ferry or cross a country border on your rental car, very attentively read the Rental Conditions of several
vendors. It is possible that one car
rental company allows to cross the border to the needed country and another company allows to use a ferry transport for your rental car. In addition, if you are planning to
buy tickets for a ferry, notify the car rentals company about it in advance, then they can tell you the number of the car you will rent.
- Never neglect the Excess fee. In most cases, you will have to leave a deposit at the time of rental (see our
FAQ about Excess Fee and Excess Fee Reduction), but you can usually insure this deposit or buy the Excess Fee
Reduction. Always pay attention to the amount of this deposit, it is possible that the rental price is low, but the Excess fee is very high or vice versa. You should always
consider the total amount, and not just the rental price.
- Consider different pickup types. The most convenient pickup type is Meet & Greet. By choosing a renting car with such option, you won’t have to stand in
line or go with your
suitcases to a shuttle bus to get to your car rental location. Instead you will be met near the exit from your terminal with a sign with your name or the rent a car company
name and your car will be waiting in the parking lot. In addition, car rentals with Meet & Greet option are usually cheaper than car rentals from the companies with a
rental desk at the airport, because they don’t include the airport fee in the rental price.

Our customers love the Estate car class for the fact that you can accommodate a lot of their belongings and travel bags. Pros: Car was nice
Cons: Way too big of a car. We got 'upgraded' when we really wanted a smaller car. When we arrived at the rental car place, we had to wait 15 minutes outside before anyone even showed up. Really unprofessional
5/5
Pros: Easy to get to and easy to return the car even after they were closed.
5/5
Great Experience
Pros: Easy check-in; paid what was quoted online and nothing more
Cons: Nothing they could do about it considering their location; but needed a gas station closer in order to fill up before dropping off the car
5/5
no problems
Pros: Agency is on the street. Car is in nearby underground garage. 24 hour drop off with key box. Nearest gas to fill up is Esso on the right bank across the river.
3/5
Place opened 15 minutes late, waited in line, got different car
Pros: This neighborhood location is on a convenient location in the Latin quarters.
Cons: Place opened 15 minutes late, there were several customer waiting outside and we ended up waiting about one hour to get our car which turns out they did not have. As usual they gave us a bigger car which is NOT what I wanted. Even though they respected the price the larger car was a big hassle. I specifically asked for a compact since I was going to be driving and parking in small spaces.
Car had 1/4 of a tank of gas only which means it is on me to get it back with the same amount.

5/5
Excellent customer service
Pros: First of all. The attention and very nice service by the customer service person( Alexandra).. the car was fantastic
5/5
Great car, staff and deal (despite a rocky start)
Pros: it was great to have some training by the staff on my hybrid rental, which was not so easy to start. one of the staff also gave me his mobile, in case I had an issue with the rental later on. The car was in very good shape, and held up very well. Also, the staff was very supportive when I got a small bruise on the car from an angry driver a few minutes before sending back the car.
Cons: Agency was empty when I arrived. waited 20+ minutes as staff were out picking up cars. not a big deal, but that was a bit stressful.
5/5
Great service
Pros: Enterprise took the time to explain how their policies worked in France regarding the initial deposit and eventual refund. In addition, they gave a great overview of the car the morning of our rental so there was no question where things like the spare tire, jack were. All in all, very good experience.
Cons: Nothing.
5/5
Nice Staff!
Pros: friendly, bilingual staff. close enough to Gare du Lyon but much better prices/availability
1/5
The office closed at 6
Cons: There was no way to collect the car after that. They canceled the reservation and the only option they offered was for me to pick up the same car the next day for a lot more money for one fewer day.

Cons: I made a reservation to rent a car and i received an email that confirmed my reservation, when i went to pick up the car, the lady from europcar told me that the reservation wasnt in her sistem and that she had no cars to rent me. I had already payed the reservation and the insurance. I was a mess, Im really angry beacuse I had to pay 400 euros to rent another car in a different agency, and it was in christmas so there were no cars left.
5/5
Cons: The seat was very uncomfortable and there was no way to adjust the back.
Also- I opted for insurance online when booking the car. The agent apparently could not see this and tried to get me to insure with them. I had proof of insurance and they still tried to sell me insurance.
5/5
Pros: Excellent service
3/5
Pros: The price was reasonable and there was no line for the pickup.
Cons: The condition of the car was very poor and it appeared that every scratch was documented, forcing me to spend about 20 minutes surveying the car finding all the dents, scratches, stains. Unsatisfactory with over 34k kms
4/5
Pros: They ended up giving me an upgraded car in order to fill my reservation. They ultimately met what I needed and fulfilled the reservation.
Cons: When I showed up to get my car, which I reserved that morning, they told me that they had no cars left and I would have to go somewhere else. After pushing a little as to how that happened, I was told that I could have the one car they left for an increased 30 euros a day. I pushed further saying it wasn't my fault that they didn't have my car that was reserved and I shouldn't have to go somewhere else if they actually did have a car available.
5/5
All great but . . . . .
Pros: It was a smooth transaction and everything went well.
Cons: The only problem was that I paid for insurance on line during the reservation and when I went to pick up the car they had no record of it. I had to buy insurance again, which was higher daily rate than the car itself!
5/5
Condition of car
Pros: Overall a very comfortable vehicle. I liked the numerous warning features. Too bad it didn't include a backup camera.
Cons: The car had more dents and scratches than usual. No windshield washer fluid and the rear window wiper blade was missing. The car occasionally made an unidentifiable tone sound.
I also had a 10 euro discount the agent would not accept.
1/5
Never again
Pros: Everything was fine with the car but now I am getting charged every month 30€ without any notice and without explanations. It is in process of sueing as they won't remove my bank details.
Cons: Warning, don't book with them. Charging after every momth wotgout notice or explanation!

Cons: We got in late on flight, they gave our car away. Made us pay for days not used and charged for an upgrade we didn't want. Never again.
5/5
Pros: Very fast and efficient at the airport
4/5
Directions
Pros: The directions on the website left me at the wrong place. When I phone in they were unable to help. After three calls they stopped answering. It took me two hours scouring a five block radius to find that it was at the train station. How easy was that? Why did no one at the customer service desk know to simply tell me??!
3/5
Good car, not great customer service
Pros: Car was clean and in good condition.
Cons: It wasn't clear at pick up or drop off how much money I would be charged. I had to look at my bank statement to find out how much I was charged.
3/5
Overcharged for my rental
Pros: Was offered $135 (Euro 119), but was charged $172 with no explanation. Disputing with my credit card company.
3/5
Very disappointed in Hertz
Pros: The car worked and did not break down.
Cons: Pick up was terribly slow. We waited almost a half hour before we were even able to get to the counter. Then had to walk to a different location to pick up the car. On getting to the garage, the car they offered us had not even been cleaned and was filthy on both the outside and the inside. We then had to wait another half hour before they gave us another car.
Even though my invoice and bill were all in EUR, when I got my finall bill I noticed that, without my authorization, they had charged me in USD and charged me an extortionate conversion rate for the privilege. I used to have a high perception of Hertz but these sleazy tactics (which only amount to a couple of $ for them) make me want to put them into the same bucket as other sleazy operators such as Ryanair.
3/5
Very poor service upon pickup and dropoff.
Pros: The car only.
Cons: Very bad service.

Cons: Me reclaman un supuesto daño sobre el auto y ya me lo facturaron en mi tarjeta de crédito. No he tenido respuestas a mi reclamo.

Cons: We were not given a receipt and told we didn't need one. The dropoff point did not look as professional as many of the other AVIS offices were were accustomed to.

Even could not get a car
Pros: Of course, nothing.
We even could not get a car and a decent attitude.
Cons: Dear Sir/Madam,
Even though I have a confirmation number, she did not provide me a car.
I have tried to call her, but instead of answering me, she did not make any explanation and put me on hold. I have tried to call several times and she put me on hold every time. It was very rude.
I had a trip with my little brother which is planned weeks ago. At the end of the day, she ruined his dream. It is not acceptable.
If I do not get a decent apology, I am going to mention about this issue in other platforms as well.
No one has a such right that ruin a kid's dream and its company's reputation.
Kind regards,
Kenan Kaya
3/5
Lack of communication and customer care.
Pros: Car was ok
Cons: They did not give me any info about where or how to drop off the car in St Malo. I got into St Malo port where I was supposed to drop it off expecting to see some sign, office, or worker to drop it off to. I drove around the area and went inside to look and ask for some kind of directions. No one there, no instructions for people to drop off nothing. We then tried to call the number provided and nobody answered and said it was closed till 2 pm. So we tried to go to another Avis office only to find them closed as well. We went back there at 2pm to find out that there was a secured parking lot that you needed to have a code to get into that was unmarked. The lady at the Avis office was rude to us and told us it was our fault that we were late even though we were never given instructions on how to drop it off or given the security code to get into the unmarked parking lot. They said they were going to charge us for another day because at this point it was 2pm 2 hours past our 12 pm return. If they would have made it clear where drop off was or had someone there to provide info we would have had there at 1130 a half hour before scheduled drop off.

Overcharged for rental
Pros: Please look into why I’m being overcharged and fix it.
Cons: Please refund amount i was overcharged.
3/5
Very Bad Service
Pros: Nothing
Cons: My booking was for 7 persons car with an acceptable rate. When arriving by taxi which I paid for it €95 they could not believe that my booking was for a 7 persons car even after showing them the confirmation email. At the end, they told me we only have a 5 persons car for the same rate and it's up to me to accept it or leave it! That was ridiculous and unprofessional. VERY BAD SERVICE INDEED.

Cons: The people working there were extremely unhelpful. Warning to all US customers: they will not a renewed license yellow paper. Ruined our trip.
5/5
Pros: great service, nice people. Manager was incredibly helpful
4/5
Car Booked Not Available
Pros: The people were very kind while they were extorting me. Will definitely look into the legalities of all of this!
Cons: The car I booked wasn't available so I had to pay more for a car I didn't want. This is extortion! You either pay or you vacation is ruined!
2/5
I was clearly not welcome
Pros: nil
Cons: the car was noisy and not fuel efficient. The staff was unwelcoming starting from the moment they realized I had booked from a broker in the US and was paying less than then French rentals. They took revenge by upselling me some insurance. I was not against it, but numbers really did not add up. It was not only more expensive, but also the EUR - USD fx rate did not make sense. I ended up paying double the amount I had initially booked. Also, there was a railway station tax which I also found out about, and when I challenged them again on this, they had no response other than a threat: "you know, we should cancel your booking because you are not a US resident but you booked through a US site". very nice...last but not least, I had to beg them to show me the car and bring me to it for a review. Initially, they did not want to come out of their cosy office. none in the office was very interested or concerned about me, and I was the only client...
4/5
Overcharge at location and language barrier
Pros: Car was relatively new and ride well
Cons: Difficult in communicating insurance options and variation in pricing between two identical reservation. Reservation wuited in USD but was charged in Euro at exactly same price.
4/5
Poor Transaction Communication
Pros: The pick-up was fantastic and so were the people. The car was in great shape and was exactly what we asked for.
Cons: I received a charge for $920 USD which I'm still disputing at the moment. The original price was $90 USD taxes and all included for our one-day rental. This major accidental charge can startle most people and hinder their vacations with the possibility of fraud on their credit card.
1/5
Really Bad Experience
Cons: Even though my reservation was confirmed, they made me wait 2 full hours because I didn't book through them (EuroCar). When I asked if I could just book throgh them, they indicated it would be 300 Euros per day, not the 14 offered through your web site. I saw that it was thier practice to make anyone who booked through a discount site to wait for two hours. Then they didn't provide me with any information for calling with issues with the vcar. and the Car had headlights that didn't work properly. Also, they said the gas tank was full, but it was not. This was a really bad experience.
1/5
Should have learnt my lesson from my previous expe
Pros: when I returned the car 2 hours late, I argued and waiting for about an hour so they could 'not' charge me an extra day. that was nice.
Cons: Renting a car is such a pain, scam, and sadly sucks away the excitement of a short break before you even set off.
I booked four days car rental for $230 knowing I would get stung for some insurance.
Then I ended up getting a smaller car, waiting 2 hours for it, being charged extra because they didn't have my car, paying surcharges.. dropping off the car with a final bill of around $550 conveniently charged to my credit card, I walked out of Avis/Budget counter feeling pretty sore.
Onur
ps. i didn't even opt for the $40 a day full insurance
5/5
We loved our car. The woman at desk upgraded us to
Pros: We had booked a smaller car but we were upgraded to a small SUV. It was very comfy and a smooth ride
Cons: It took a long time to check out
3/5
Worst manager I`ve ever met
Pros: The car was clean and new. It had good navigation system and blutooth which is important.
Cons: The manager guy at the office was rude, unpolite and bad educated. He made our rental experience with this company terrible and left very bed impression.

Cons: Finding the drop off location was very frustrating. There were no signs outside the bus/metro/car terminal that said hertz or dollar rental drop offs were made here. When I did find an underground gate that said drop offs, it required a ticket to go through, so I had to ask for help on how to get through and how to get to the correct drop off spot. I ended up being an hour late for my drop off. Very frustrating.
4/5
Cons: Pick up was a bit confused. We walked two blocks to the garage and arrived at the 5th sub level to find space 271 occupied by a car that was not ours. We found ours by walking the line with the remot unlock. It was 20 spaces away. All was good once we found it
5/5
Pros: Able to change reservation very easily
5/5
Pros: Very friendly staff. Convenient 24 hr. drop off.
3/5
Car was not available at rental location.
Pros: car was clean and overall good shape.
Cons: Car was not available at the rental location. Agent mentioned some issues with booking system, they could not find my file in their computer. At the end, the agent sent me to a different rental location. I had 3 bags with me, it was raining, the other location was >1 mile away.
4/5
Good value but difficult to find.
Pros: The ease of renting means I will likely rent again.
Cons: The pick up location was hard to find in the Louvre.
3/5
Great car, terrible customer service
Pros: The car I received was larger than I had booked, which wasn't a problem. The car was clean a son perfect condition.
Cons: The pickup experience was difficult. There are no signs or indications that Dollar is operated nub hertz at this location, so I wandered around for half and hour looking for a Dollar location that wasn't there. The person who processed my car rental barely spoke to me, didn't explain where to find the car, didn't tell me which fuel to put into it, and most importantly did NOT explain to get back into the very-difficult-to-find garage to return the car. He was entirely unhelpful and ensured I won't rent from Dollar again.
Also, the deposit fee of 850 euros is totally insane. I've never seen one so high before.
1/5
I wasn't able to pick up my car and it was dollar's fault
Pros: Nothing
Cons: Clicking "get directions" redirected me to another location in the city which turned out to be on break for 2 hours at pickup time. When I was break was over they told me to go to a different branch. Getting there took another hour so I was 3 hours late in total and they wouldn't let me pick it up. Horrible service overall which almost ruined my trip.
3/5
Not what I thought
Pros: The car was great.
Cons: The rental was actually fulfilled by hertz and many of the features that were advertised when we booked (like a second driver for free and total insurance for only $11) weren't available through Hertz.
4/5
Rental Office is a disaster: 1 hour late. Had to wait 1 hour outside.
Pros: The car was OK
Cons: The rental office was suppose to open Saturday 8 am. The guy arrived at 9 and said "I am sorry for the delay" to the many people waiting for him. Not serious at all. Moreover he had a sticker on the door saying "I'll be back in 15 minutes". He definitely had it from the night before. I would consider it twice before renting again there.
1/5
The is no rental car dollar. Doesn’t exist
Cons: Doesn’t exist dollar. Didn’t give the car
